I think it would be a great idea to utilize the surveys in several ways in a classroom. First, I see the benefits of a teacher produced survey in order to get a quick idea of the student’s thoughts. In an English class it would be a great idea to gear the survey towards the student’s initial reaction to literature. During this survey I would try to find out if they like to read and how often they actually spend reading, including novels, school material, text messages, ect. I would also ask them questions to see their initial reactions about authors and texts including Shakespeare, the Odyssey, or Hawthorne. Each of these carry a level of rumors that mold the student’s judgments before they actually read the material. I also see the benefits of having students make their own surveys as this would allow me to get to know each student better and faster. The survey topic would also be student driven allowing them to dig deeper into their own preferences. This exercise would allow the students a chance to get to know each other if they are in a classroom with students that they do not know.
